Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: The author did not mention the third matter here; however, some other takhrij sources mention it as follows: "amrun tabayyana rushduhu fattabi'uhu" (a matter whose rightness has become clear, so follow it).
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" (da'if jiddan) because of Hisham bin Ziyad Abu al-Miqdam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham did not hear this narration directly from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi; rather there is a "majhul" (unknown) person as an intermediary between them. Imam Muslim, in the introduction to his "Sahih", reported by way of al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Hulwani that the narration of Hisham Abu al-Miqdam was in the book of 'Affan bin Muslim, in which Hisham admitted: "A man called 'Yahya bin so-and-so' told me, from Muhammad bin Ka'b."
Important point: When 'Affan was told that people say Hisham heard it directly from Muhammad bin Ka'b, he said: "Hisham was put to trial because of this very hadith (i.e. his falsehood was exposed); earlier he used to give Yahya as the intermediary, and later he claimed to have heard it directly from Muhammad bin Ka'b."
Reference / Source: It is recorded in "Su'alat al-Barqani" (p. 75) that al-Barqani asked Imam al-Daraqutni about this long hadith of Ibn 'Abbas in which 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz is mentioned, and Imam al-Daraqutni said: "'Affan bin Muslim spoiled it (Hisham's claim) by making clear the reality of this hadith, because he related that Hisham used to narrate it earlier from Muhammad bin Ka'b by way of another person, and then later he began to name Muhammad bin Ka'b directly."
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Daraqutni (Abu al-Hasan) said: "I wished that this narration were sahih, because its chain with us is "'ali" (with few intermediaries); it was narrated to us through 'Ubayd Allah al-'Ayshi, from Hisham." Al-Barqani says: I asked: (Through) Ibn Mani'? He said: Yes.
Reference / Source: This route was transmitted by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (7/ 360) by way of 'Affan bin Muslim, from Hisham bin Ziyad, in which Hisham clearly mentioned the intermediary "Yahya bin so-and-so": "Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi came to 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz", and then he mentioned it in abridged form.
Reference / Source: This narration was transmitted in long and abridged forms by a large group of imams with the chain of Hisham bin Ziyad, from Muhammad bin Ka'b (dropping the intermediary): al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran "al-Zuhd" (134), 'Abd bin Humayd (675), Ibn Majah (959), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (1070), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi "Nawadir al-Usul" (223, 1147), 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad "Zawa'id al-Zuhd" (1707), al-Tabari "Tahdhib al-Athar" (2/ 538), al-'Uqayli "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" (1891), Ibn Hibban "al-Majruhin" (3/ 88-89), al-Tabarani "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (10774, 10781), Ibn 'Adi "al-Kamil" (7/ 106), Ibn Shahin "al-Targhib" (475), Abu al-Tahir al-Mukhallis "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1034, 3020, 3154), al-Sahmi "Tarikh Jurjan" (1071), Abu Nu'aym "al-Hilyah" (3/ 218) and "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 36), al-Quda'i "Musnad al-Shihab" (in several places), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr "Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm" (1388), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi "Akhlaq al-Rawi" (1184), Qawam al-Sunnah "al-Targhib" (660, 2107), and Ibn 'Asakir mentioned it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (55/ 131-134).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Abu Dawud (694, 1485), and through his route by Imam al-Bayhaqi (2/ 279), by way of 'Abd Allah bin Ya'qub, and also by Ibn 'Adi (7/ 106) by way of Musa bin Khalaf; both of them narrate from "a person" ('amman haddathahu) who heard it from Muhammad bin Ka'b.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn 'Adi says that this "person" (the unnamed narrator) is none other than "Abu al-Miqdam" (Hisham bin Ziyad). Imam Abu Dawud says: "This hadith is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b through several routes, but all of them are "wahiyah" (extremely weak / worthless); this route is the "amthal" (best) of them, but it too is weak."
Grading: This narration, with all its chains, is weak and not established.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (7/ 361) narrated it in separate parts, and Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (2453), al-'Uqayli (1377) and al-Tabarani (10775) narrated it by way of 'Isa bin Maymun. Also Ibn al-Mundhir (2452), al-'Uqayli (241 - 244) and al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (806) transmitted it through the route of Tammam bin Bazi'; al-Tabari (2/ 537), Ibn 'Adi (4/ 52) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Akhlaq al-Rawi" (1185) through the route of Salih bin Hassan; al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1432) and Ibn 'Asakir (37/ 346) through the route of 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Muhammad al-Awza'i, from 'Amr bin al-Muhajir; Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (5) and "al-Tawakkul" (9), and al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi in "Nawadir al-Usul" (222), through the route of 'Abd al-Rahim bin Zayd al-'Ammi, from his father Zayd al-'Ammi; and al-Bayhaqi (7/ 272) through the route of al-Qasim bin 'Urwah. All six of these narrators narrate it from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-'Uqayli said after this narration: "No trustworthy narrator reported this hadith from Muhammad bin Ka'b; it was narrated by Hisham bin Ziyad Abu al-Miqdam, 'Isa bin Maymun and Musadif bin Ziyad al-Qurashi, and all of these are "matruk" (abandoned) narrators." Under narration no. (1891) he further said that no chain of this hadith is established. Imam al-Bayhaqi said that it is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b through another, munqati' chain, but no chain on this matter is established.
Important point: Our finding is that 'Isa bin Maymun, Tammam bin Bazi', Salih bin Hassan and 'Abd al-Rahim bin Zayd are all matruk. We were unable to find a biography (tarjamah) of al-Qasim bin 'Urwah. The best of all these chains is that of 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Muhammad al-Awza'i, from 'Amr bin al-Muhajir; but 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Awza'i was mentioned by Ibn 'Asakir, who named only two students who narrated from him and recorded no criticism (jarh) or praise (ta'dil) of him, so he is counted among the "majhul" (of unknown condition) narrators.
Grading: This chain is apparently trustworthy, but it is "shadh" and not preserved.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam narrated it in "al-Khutab wa al-Mawa'iz" (123) with the chain Hajjaj bin Muhammad al-Missisi, from Fitr bin Khalifah, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Sabit, in which Ibn Sabit says that he said to 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz: "Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to us" (and then he mentioned the whole narration).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are trustworthy except Fitr bin Khalifah, in whose narration there is no harm (in itself) except when he contradicts trustworthy narrators. Here, by reporting this strange (gharib) chain, he has contradicted the other narrators, since everyone narrates it through the route of Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi, and the real person of this incident with 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz is Muhammad bin Ka'b himself.
Important point: As has already been mentioned, the hadith-master imams pointed out that no chain of this hadith is established as sahih. And Allah knows best.
Grading: This narration is weak because it is munqati' (broken).
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (7/ 361) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Yazid bin Khunays, from Wuhayb bin al-Ward, who said: "It has reached us that Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi went in to 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz."
Note / Clarification: Here he mentioned his story with 'Umar bin 'Abd al-'Aziz but did not relate the "marfu' hadith" (the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but this narration is "munqati'", because Wuhayb bin al-Ward did not hear it directly from Muhammad bin Ka'b but narrated it with the words "it has reached us" (balaghana), which is a sign that the chain is broken.
Grading: Da'if (weak).
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi narrated it in his "Musnad" (2767) from Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i, and al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (4952) through the route of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from 'Abd al-Karim bin Abi al-Mukhariq, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas as marfu': "I have been forbidden to pray facing those who are sleeping and those who are talking."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'Abd al-Karim bin Abi al-Mukhariq is weak; furthermore, Sharik al-Nakha'i and Ibn Abi Layla were contradicted in making this narration "mawsul" (i.e. reporting the chain as connected up to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Grading: Mursal (weak).
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (2491) narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/ 257) from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, from Sufyan al-Thawri. Both of them narrate from 'Abd al-Karim bin Abi al-Mukhariq, from Mujahid, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been forbidden to pray behind those who are sleeping and those who are talking."
Note / Clarification: This narration is "mursal", because the intermediary between Mujahid (a Successor) and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is missing.
Grading: The mursal is what is correct.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/ 257) narrated it as mursal from Ibn 'Ulayyah (Isma'il bin Ibrahim), from Layth bin Abi Sulaym, from Mujahid.
Important point: Since the majority of trustworthy narrators report it as mursal, technically it is correct (sawab) that this narration is "mursal".
Grading: Very weak / munkar.
Reference / Source: It was narrated as marfu' by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (7326), Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/ 89 - 90), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3679) and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/ 206) with the chain Bishr bin Salm al-Bajali, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Rawwad, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Abu Hatim al-Razi said about the narrator Bishr bin Salm al-Bajali that he is "munkar al-hadith".
Details of the narration: A second route of it was narrated by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Qada' al-Hawa'ij" (35) and "Istina' al-Ma'ruf" (90), and by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (8/ 200) by way of Abu Muhammad al-Khurasani; but Imam Abu Hatim said about Abu Muhammad al-Khurasani that he is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator.
Grading: Hasan.
Reference / Source: It is narrated as marfu' from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When a man says something and then turns (to the right and left), it is a trust." This narration is found in Musnad Ahmad (22/ 14474), Abu Dawud (4868) and al-Tirmidhi (1959).
Important point: On the same topic, a narration with the words "al-majalis bi-l-amanah" (gatherings are held in trust) is in Ahmad (23/ 14693) and Abu Dawud (4869), and this portion is also hasan.
Grading: Sahih.
Reference / Source: It is narrated as marfu' from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Kill the two black ones during prayer: the snake and the scorpion." This narration is found in Ahmad (12/ 7178), Abu Dawud (921), Ibn Majah (1245), al-Tirmidhi (390) and al-Nasa'i (525).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) with the same meaning can also be seen in Sahih Muslim (1200) (75).

Grading: La ba'sa bihi (there is no harm in the narrators of the chain / close to hasan).
Reference / Source: It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which deed is the best? He said: "That you bring happiness into the heart of your Muslim brother, or pay off a debt for him, or feed him." This narration is found in Ibn Abi al-Dunya (112), al-Tabarani (91), Ibn Shahin (375), al-Bayhaqi (7273) and Qawam al-Sunnah (408, 2081).
