Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7896

Amr bin al-Sharid narrates from his father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him while he was sitting leaning on the palm of his (left) hand, which he had placed behind his back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you sit the way those who have incurred (Allah's) anger sit?"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its chain is "hasan" because of 'Ubayd (bin 'Abd al-Wahid bin Sharik), for whom corroboration is also established.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Jurayj ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz) explicitly stated his hearing (directly) from Ibrahim in the narration with Imam 'Abd al-Razzaq.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (32/ 19454), Imam Abu Dawud (4848) through the route of 'Ali bin Bahr, and Imam Ibn Hibban (5674) through the route of al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Harrani, and both of them narrate it from 'Isa bin Yunus with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam 'Abd al-Razzaq, contradicting 'Isa bin Yunus, narrated it in his "Musannaf" (3057) from Ibn Jurayj ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz), from Ibrahim bin Maysarah, by way of 'Amr bin al-Sharid, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration is "mursal", and in it the prohibition of this sitting posture is restricted to the prayer, namely: "(In prayer) this is the manner of sitting of those who incurred wrath."
Important point: What is correct is that this prohibition relates to the state of prayer, as has passed in the marfu' hadith of Ibn 'Umar (earlier no. 933) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sitting in prayer leaning on the left hand.
Reference / Source: Imam 'Abd al-Razzaq mentioned both these hadiths in his "Musannaf" (2/ 197) under the chapter "Sitting in prayer leaning on the hands". For further research, see Ibn Hazm's "al-Muhalla" (4/ 19).
General principle: The phrase "alyat yadihi" refers to the fleshy part of the hand at the base of the thumb.
