It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Alhamdu lillahi rabbil-alamin' (All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds); let it be said to him: 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you); and let him say: 'Yaghfirullahu lana wa lakum' (May Allah forgive us and you)."
This is a hadith that no one other than Ata bin al-Sa'ib narrated as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) from Abu Abd al-Rahman from Ibn Mas'ud, and Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i and Abyad bin Aban al-Qurashi are alone in narrating it from him. The correct version of it is the narration of the meticulous hafiz Imam Sufyan bin Sa'id al-Thawri from Ata bin al-Sa'ib.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the original manuscripts the word "wa-li-yuqal" was recorded here, but we have corrected it and written it according to the standard, commonly used Arabic usage (al-jaddah).
Grading: This narration is sahih as mawquf (as the statement of a Companion), but its (marfu') chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered from "ikhtilat" (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life, and the narration of Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i from him is from after his ikhtilat. There is disagreement about his corroborator "Abyad bin Aban al-Qurashi": according to Abu Hatim he is not strong; al-Azdi says that he has been criticised; while according to al-Daraqutni there is no harm in him. Important point: None of the scholars has clarified whether Abyad narrated from 'Ata' before or after his ikhtilat. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Trustworthy narrators such as Sufyan al-Thawri (who narrated from him before his ikhtilat) narrated it as mawquf on Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam Abu Hatim in "al-'Ilal" (2220) and Imam al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (927) considered it correct that it is mawquf, as the mawquf narration is better known. Among those whom Imam al-Daraqutni did not mention, Sufyan al-Thawri, Muhammad bin Fudayl and Abu 'Awanah also narrated it as mawquf. The author too gave preference to the mawquf. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (9981) narrated it through the route of al-Fadl bin Sahl al-A'raj, from Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Raqashi. Grading: Imam al-Nasa'i declared it "munkar" and said: In my view Ja'far bin Sulayman heard it from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib after his ikhtilat. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (4008), Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (10326), "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (5685) and "al-Du'a'" (1983), and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8904) and (8905) through various routes from Ahmad bin 'Abd Allah bin Yunus. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani said in "al-Awsat" that no one narrated it from 'Ata' except Abyad bin Aban and al-Mughirah bin Muslim. Ahmad bin Yunus is alone in narrating it from Abyad, and al-Nu'man bin 'Abd al-Salam is alone in narrating it from al-Mughirah. Note / Clarification: We have not found this narration of al-Mughirah bin Muslim anywhere.
