Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7886

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Alhamdu lillahi ala kulli hal' (All praise is for Allah in every state); let the people say to him: 'Yarhamukumullah' (May Allah have mercy on you); and let him (the sneezer) say: 'Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum' (May Allah guide you and set your affairs right)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but its chain, like the previous narration, is "da'if" (weak) (because of Ibn Abi Layla).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muthanna refers to Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-'Anbari.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (2/ 995) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (2741 M) through the route of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ibn Majah (3715) and 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "Zawa'id al-Musnad" (2/ 972) through the route of 'Ali bin Mushir, and by Imam al-Nasa'i (9969) through the route of Abu 'Awanah Waddah al-Yashkuri; both of them narrate it from Ibn Abi Layla.
Details of the narration: In the narration of 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad, the words are "al-hamdu lillahi rabb al-'alamin".
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad (973) narrated it through the route of Mansur bin Abi al-Aswad, who, narrating from Ibn Abi Layla, was in doubt whether it is from "al-Hakam" or from "'Isa", from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here "al-Hakam" refers to "al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah".
