Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 788

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer, and the recitation became heavy for him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he finished, he said: "It seems that you recite behind your imam?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so, except for Umm al-Qur'an (Surah al-Fatihah), for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Muhammad bin Ishaq is accused of "tadlis", here he has stated explicitly that he heard it from Makhul, with Ibn Hibban (1785), where he (Ibn Hibban) narrated it through the chain Ibn Khuzaymah from Mu'ammal bin Hisham.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 37/(22671), (22694), (22745), (22746) and (22750), as did Abu Dawud (823), al-Tirmidhi (311) and Ibn Hibban (1848), via routes from Muhammad bin Ishaq. Ibn Ishaq also stated explicitly that he heard it with Ahmad (22745) and Ibn Hibban. See the full documentation at its first occurrence in 'Musnad Ahmad'. Al-Tirmidhi called this hadith of Ubadah "hasan".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) here made "Abu Nu'aym" to be Wahb bin Kaysan, but al-Dhahabi in 'al-Talkhis' declared this a mistake and said that Wahb was young (at that time); we say: it is as al-Dhahabi said. Al-Bayhaqi said that this "Abu Nu'aym" was actually the "mu'adhdhin" (who gave the call to prayer and led the prayer), whereas the actual narrator from Ubadah is Mahmud bin al-Rabi', and al-Walid bin Muslim made a mistake in it. Likewise Ibn Sa'id also declared it al-Walid's mistake, with al-Daraqutni (1218).
Details of the narration: The hadith of Zayd bin Waqid referred to was transmitted by Abu Dawud (824) through the chain Makhul from Nafi' bin Mahmud bin al-Rabi' from Ubadah. Nafi' bin Mahmud was with him when Abu Nu'aym (the mu'adhdhin) led them in the dawn prayer. Al-Daraqutni (1220) declared this chain hasan.
Important point: Al-Bayhaqi reported that Makhul heard this hadith from both Mahmud bin al-Rabi' and his son Nafi' bin Mahmud, and both of them heard it directly from Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him).
