It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umm al-Qur'an (Surah al-Fatihah) is a substitute for (sufficient in place of) the other surahs, but the other surahs cannot be a substitute for it."
The two Shaykhs have recorded this hadith with different wordings. Most of the narrators of this report are imams and trustworthy, and they meet the condition of the two Shaykhs.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is weak (da'if). Technical note / Defect ('illah): About Muhammad bin Khallad al-Iskandarani, al-Dhahabi said in 'Mizan al-I'tidal': "It is not known who he is." It is reported from Ibn Yunus al-Misri that he narrates munkar reports, and he (al-Dhahabi) cited this very hadith as an example of that. Al-Daraqutni said that Ibn Khallad is alone in narrating it. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in his book 'al-Qira'ah Khalf al-Imam' (21) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni narrated it in 'al-Sunan' (1228) via Umar bin Ahmad al-Jawhari from Ahmad bin Sayyar. Important point: In this hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit, the "preserved" (mahfuz, firmly established) wording is: "There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah)", or words of similar meaning. Reference / Source: A group of trustworthy narrators narrated it from Sufyan bin Uyaynah with this same chain, among them Ahmad (37/22677), Ali bin al-Madini (al-Bukhari 756), and Ibn Abi Shaybah, Amr al-Naqid and Ishaq bin Rahawayh (Muslim 394/34).
