Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 783

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that in his prayer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would look to the right and left (from the corner of his eye), but he would not turn his neck behind his back.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. This is the permissible turning (iltifat), in which one looks only with the eye and does not turn the neck.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All of its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but this narration is defective (ma'lul) because of "irsal".
Important point: "Abu al-Muwajjih" is Muhammad bin Amr al-Fazari, and "Abu Ammar" is al-Husayn bin Hurayth.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (1125) and Ibn Hibban (2288) narrated it via Abu Ammar al-Husayn bin Hurayth with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 4/(2485) and 5/(2791), as did al-Tirmidhi (587) and al-Nasa'i (534), via various routes from al-Fadl bin Musa al-Sinani, and it will come later at number (953).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This hadith has been declared defective (ma'lul) because of "irsal" (the Companion's name being absent from the chain). Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Taliqani on one occasion narrated it, with Ahmad (2485), through the chain al-Fadl bin Musa from Abd Allah bin Sa'id from Thawr from Ikrimah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal", whereas Zuhayr bin Harb, narrating from al-Fadl bin Musa with Abu Ya'la (2592), contradicted him and narrated it as "mawsul" (connected), as al-Fadl's other students narrated it.
Details of the narration: Waki' bin al-Jarrah also narrated it as "mursal" through the chain Abd Allah bin Sa'id from some of the companions of Ikrimah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Ahmad (2486) and al-Tirmidhi (588) transmitted it.
Reference / Source: It is also via Waki' in Sunan Abi Dawud (in the transmission of Ibn al-Ushnani), as mentioned in 'Tuhfat al-Ashraf' (6014), but there the wording is "Abd Allah bin Sa'id from a man from Ikrimah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)".
Important point: Abu Dawud said that this (mursal narration) is more sound, that is, than the narration made connected by mentioning Ibn Abbas.

Important point: Rather, al-Bukhari alone narrated it, and it is in his "Sahih" at numbers (751) and (3291).
