Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 779

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he began the prayer, he would say: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, tabaraka ismuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruka' (O Allah, You are free of all imperfection, with Your praise; Your name is blessed, Your majesty is exalted, and there is no god besides You).
This hadith has also been narrated from Umar with a chain going back to the Prophet, but that is not authentic.

Grading: This report is "sahih" and all its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Yahya al-Naysaburi has here dropped an intermediary from Abu Mu'awiyah, if this is preserved from him: between al-A'mash and al-Aswad there is "Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i". This is how Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah in his 'Musannaf' (1/232), and al-Hasan bin al-Junayd with al-Daraqutni (1144). Likewise Waki', Hafs bin Ghiyath, Abd Allah bin Numayr and Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated it from al-A'mash, with Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/230 and 237), Ibn al-Mundhir in 'al-Awsat' (1262) and al-Daraqutni (1153).
Reference / Source: Muslim (399) (52) narrated it via al-Awza'i from Abdah bin Abi Lubabah, that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say these words (Subhanaka Allahumma, and the rest) aloud; note that Abdah's narration from Umar is "mursal".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Rahman bin Umar bin Shaybah narrated it as "musnad" (marfu') through his father from Nafi' from Ibn Umar from Umar. Al-Daraqutni narrated it in 'al-Sunan' (1142) and then made clear that this shaykh raised it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereas what is preserved (mahfuz) is that it is the saying of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself (mawquf).
Important point: Likewise Ibrahim narrated it from Alqamah and al-Aswad, and Yahya bin Ayyub from Umar bin Shaybah, as "mawquf", and this is the correct view. Al-Daraqutni cited it at (1143) via Yahya bin Ayyub.
