Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7786

Abdullah bin Buraydah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: In the Jahiliyyah, when a boy was born to us, we would slaughter a sheep on his behalf, shave his head and smear his head with (the slaughtered animal's) blood. Then, when Islam came, (we changed the practice, and) when a boy was born to us we would slaughter a sheep, shave his head and smear his head with saffron.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (M) this word has been distorted (a scribal error) into "Yazid", while in manuscript (S) it is written as "Zayd".

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Ibrahim bin Hilal (al-Buzanjirdi) and al-Husayn bin Waqid.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (2843) narrated it by way of 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin Waqid, from his father al-Husayn bin Waqid, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), found in Ibn Hibban (5308).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah; however, Imam al-Daraqutni, in his book "al-'Ilal" (3911), identified a defect ('illah) in it due to "inqita'" (a break in the chain).
