Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is sahih with respect to the narration of Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus) from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Zubayr explicitly stated that he heard it from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah in the narrations of hadith scholars other than the author (al-Hakim). As for the narration of 'Amr bin Dinar from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah, his hearing of this particular hadith is questionable (fihi nazar), as will be detailed below.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it in "al-Musnad" 23/ (14840) and (14902), Imam Abu Dawud in "al-Sunan" (3789) and Imam al-Nasa'i in "al-Sunan" (5272) by way of Hammad bin Salamah, from Abu al-Zubayr alone, from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 22/ (14450), Imam Muslim in (1941), Imam Ibn Majah in (3191), Imam al-Nasa'i in (4822), (4836) and (6609), and Imam Ibn Hibban in (5269) and (5270) by various routes from Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus), with a similar meaning.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (1793), Imam al-Nasa'i (4821, 6608) and Imam Ibn Hibban (5268) narrated it by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and Imam al-Nasa'i (4822, 6609) by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid; both of them (Sufyan and al-Husayn) narrate it from 'Amr bin Dinar alone, from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan sahih" and said that several narrators narrated it in the same way from 'Amr bin Dinar from Jabir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hammad bin Zayd narrated it from 'Amr bin Dinar, from Muhammad bin 'Ali (Imam al-Baqir), from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), but the narration of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah (which is without the intermediary) is more correct. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: I heard Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari say: "Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah is a greater hafiz of hadith than Hammad bin Zayd."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: 'Amr bin Dinar explicitly stated that he heard it from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) in 'Abd al-Razzaq's "al-Musannaf" (8734), but this explicit statement of hearing is contradicted by what Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah said, as narrated from him by Imam al-Humaydi in his "al-Musnad" (1292): "In everything I heard from 'Amr bin Dinar, he said 'sami'tu Jabiran' (I heard Jabir), except for these two hadiths, meaning the hadiths about the meat of horses (luhum al-khayl) and mukhabarah (a type of sharecropping), so I do not know whether there is someone else between him and Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in these two or not."
Details of the narration: As for the narration of Hammad bin Zayd, in which he added Muhammad bin 'Ali (Imam al-Baqir) between 'Amr bin Dinar and Jabir bin 'Abd Allah, it was narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (4219, 5520, 5524), Imam Muslim (5062), Imam Abu Dawud (3788), Imam al-Nasa'i (6607) and Imam Ibn Hibban (5273) by various routes.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Nasa'i said that he knows of no narrator who agreed with Hammad bin Zayd in mentioning Muhammad bin 'Ali as the intermediary (that is, he is alone in mentioning him).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Abu Dawud (3808) also narrated it by way of Ibn Jurayj, in which 'Amr bin Dinar says: "A man (rajul) informed me from Jabir."
Important point: This supports the narration of Hammad bin Zayd, showing that he is not alone in mentioning an intermediary between 'Amr bin Dinar and Jabir. Perhaps it is for this reason that the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) turned away from the narration of those who dropped (omitted) the intermediary Muhammad bin 'Ali al-Baqir. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (4822, 6609) narrated by way of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Najih, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fed us the meat of horses on the day of Khaybar and forbade us the meat of donkeys." Imam Ibn Majah (3197) reported it by way of Sufyan al-Thawri and Ma'mar bin Rashid, Imam al-Nasa'i (4826) by way of al-Thawri, and Imam al-Nasa'i (4823) by way of 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi; all three of them (al-Thawri, Ma'mar and 'Ubayd Allah) narrate from 'Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "We used to eat the meat of horses. I asked: Mules too? He said: No."
Note / Clarification: 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi added these words in his narration: "(We used to eat this meat) in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad in 22/ (14463) and Imam al-Tirmidhi in (1478) narrated by way of Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "On the day of Khaybar the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade domestic donkeys, the meat of mules, every beast of prey with fangs and every bird with talons."
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called this narration "hasan gharib".
