It is narrated from al-Harith bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes may offer the fara' (slaughtering the first offspring of a she-camel in the name of idols) and whoever wishes may not; and whoever wishes may offer the 'atirah (the special sacrifice of the month of Rajab) and whoever wishes may not; and in the case of sheep and goats, it is their sacrifice (that is the Sunnah)."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from 'Utbah bin Abd al-Malik al-Sahmi, and Ibn Hibban included him in "al-Thiqat"; he has also been corroborated. It was said of Zurarah bin Karim that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (ru'yah); several narrators also narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", but said that whoever called him a Companion has erred. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated it at length in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1257) from al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Hulwani, from Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its printed edition has "'Utbah bin Abd Allah", whereas the correct name is "'Utbah bin Abd al-Malik". Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (1065), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (3351) and al-Bayhaqi (9/312), via Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id from 'Utbah bin Abd al-Malik. Al-Tabarani's narration is lengthy. Important point: This narration will come later via Yahya bin Zurarah bin Karim from his father under hadith number (7777), and its takhrij will be given there. (15972). Reference / Source: The other hadiths of this chapter can be seen in "Musnad Ahmad" under hadith numbers (6713) and (15972). Note / Clarification: The word "farra'a" in the hadith derives from "al-fara'" (with a fathah on the ra'); it means the first offspring of a she-camel, which the Arabs used to slaughter (as a custom). Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir writes in "al-Nihayah" that it was a custom among the Arabs for a man to make a vow: if such-and-such happened, or his flock reached such-and-such a number, he would slaughter one out of every ten of them in the month of Rajab; these were called "'ata'ir". This practice continued in the early period of Islam and was then abrogated. Note / Clarification: Al-Khattabi says that it means a goat that was slaughtered in Rajab.
