Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 775

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to spread his fingers wide in the prayer.
Sa'id bin Sim'an is a well-known Successor (tabi'i) from the people of Madinah.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak (da'if).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin al-Yaman has been criticized with respect to his memory, and according to al-Tirmidhi he made a mistake in the wording of this hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (239) and Ibn Hibban (1769) narrated it via Abd Allah bin Sa'id al-Ashajj (and al-Tirmidhi paired Qutaybah with him) with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi declared this narration of Yahya bin Yaman mistaken and declared sahih the narrations of others from Ibn Abi Dhi'b in which there is mention of "raising the hands fully extended" (maddan). It seems he took the meaning of "spreading his fingers" (nashr asabi'ihi) to be keeping space between them. Likewise Abu Hatim al-Razi considered Yahya bin al-Yaman to have erred in it, as mentioned in his son's book 'Ilal al-Hadith' (265) and (458).
