Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 774

Sa'id bin Sim'an said: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came in to us in the mosque of Banu Zurayq and said: "There are three things that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do which the people have abandoned: when he stood for the prayer, he would do like this" - and Abu Amir gestured with his hand, neither spreading his fingers apart nor pressing them together.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Its explanatory supporting report is the following.

Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated something similar in 15/(9608) and 16/(10492), as did Abu Dawud (753), al-Tirmidhi (240) and al-Nasa'i (959), via various routes from Ibn Abi Dhi'b with this same chain.
Details of the narration: The full wording with Ahmad and al-Nasa'i is: "Three things the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do which people have abandoned: he would raise his hands fully extended when he began the prayer, he would say takbir every time he bowed and rose, and he would keep silent before the recitation, asking Allah of His bounty." With Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi it is abridged: "When he began the prayer, he would raise his hands fully extended." Two of these three will come later at number (876).
