Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 773

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I prayed behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), behind Abu Bakr, behind Umar, behind Uthman and behind Ali, and all of them used to recite "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" aloud.
I have mentioned this hadith only as a supporting report for what preceded it. These reports that we have mentioned contradict the hadith of Qatadah which our imams narrate from him. There remain on this topic reports from the Commander of the Believers Uthman, Ali, Talhah bin Ubaydullah, Jabir bin Abdullah, Abdullah bin Umar, al-Hakam bin Umayr al-Thumali, al-Nu'man bin Bashir, Samurah bin Jundub, Buraydah al-Aslami and Aishah, the daughter of al-Siddiq, all of which I have recorded for this chapter; I left them out preferring brevity, and have abridged from them what suits this chapter. Likewise I have mentioned in this chapter those of the Companions, the Successors and their followers (may Allah be pleased with them) who recited Bismillah aloud.

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The condition of al-Abbas bin Imran and Sayf bin Amr in the chain has not become clear to us; the criticism of Muhammad bin Abi al-Sari's memory has already passed, and Isma'il bin Abi Uways is likewise not free of criticism. A large group of Malik's students narrated the opposite of this: that they did not recite "Bismillah" when beginning the prayer.
Note / Clarification: One group of them narrated it from Malik as 'mawquf' (i.e. without mentioning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), while others narrated it as 'musnad' (up to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), but none of them mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in it. Ibn Abd al-Barr explained all of this in 'al-Tamhid' 2/228-230. This hadith is in 'Musnad Ahmad' 20/(12714) via Hammad bin Salamah from Qatadah, Thabit and Humayd from Anas; see the full documentation there.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi strongly censured al-Hakim in 'Talkhis al-Mustadrak' and said: "Was the author (al-Hakim) not ashamed to cite this fabricated (mawdu') hadith? I testify by Allah, and by Allah, that it is a lie."

General principle: Al-Bayhaqi said in 'Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar' (3140): Some scholars hold that they would sometimes recite it aloud and sometimes not, so the narrations of both kinds are sahih in terms of their chains. The matter is broad: one may recite it aloud if one wishes, or quietly if one wishes, but it must be recited. Their difference is only about reciting aloud, not about reciting it at all. Whoever said "he did not recite it" meant "he did not recite it aloud". And Allah knows best.
