Technical note / Defect ('illah): Outwardly this chain appears strong, but what is well known is that Hatim bin Isma'il actually narrates from "Sharik bin Abd Allah al-Nakha'i al-Qadi", and he had a poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz). Moreover, this Sharik narrated it through the chain Isma'il al-Makki from Qatadah from Anas, as in 'Sunan al-Daraqutni' (1178). This "Isma'il" is actually Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, whose weakness is agreed upon.
Details of the narration: He was also contradicted in its wording: a group of Qatadah's students (such as Shu'bah, Sa'id bin Abi Arubah and others) narrated from him from Anas something with the meaning that he did not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman recite "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim" aloud. The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) and others narrated it; for further documentation see 'Musnad Ahmad' 19/(11991).
