It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever hangs up a tamimah (amulet), may Allah not fulfil his wish; and whoever hangs up a wad'ah (seashell), may Allah not grant him ease."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is weak because Khalid bin Ubayd al-Ma'afiri is majhul (unknown), since only Haywah (bin Shurayh) narrated from him and no one except Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy. Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah (who is hasan al-hadith in corroborating chains and supporting reports) corroborated him, if he heard it from Mishrah bin Ma'an, for Ibn Hibban described Ibn Lahi'ah as a "mudallis". Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Hibban (6086) via Harmalah bin Yahya, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 28/ (17404) via Abu Abd al-Rahman Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri', from Haywah bin Shurayh. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (p. 486) via Abu al-Aswad al-Nadr bin Abd al-Jabbar, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Mishrah. Note / Clarification: This narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (8494) via Abu Asim al-Nabil, from Haywah. Grading: The "mahfuz" (preserved) narration is the one that will come with the author at no. (7703) via Dukhayn from Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), in the wording: "Whoever hangs (a tamimah) has committed shirk." General principle: A "tamimah" is a bead that the Arabs used to hang on their children, believing it protected them from the evil eye; Islam declared it void. Note / Clarification: "Al-wada'ah" (with a fathah on the dal) is a white thing (a cowrie shell) brought from the sea, which used to be hung on children for fear of the evil eye. Note / Clarification: "La wada'a Allahu lahu" means: may Allah not grant him ease and tranquillity. One view is: may Allah not relieve him of what he fears. Ibn Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid" 17/ 163 that it means: may Allah not leave him in the well-being he was in.
