Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7690

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf and Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with them both) went out intending to take a bath, and they reached a pond. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) went ahead to find a screen, until he took off a woollen cloak he was wearing, put it down and entered the water. Amir said: I looked at him and my eye struck him (with the evil eye). I heard the sound of him struggling in the water. I came to him and called him three times, but he did not answer me. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came walking and waded into the water, until it was as though I could see the whiteness of his shins. He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his chest and made this supplication: 'Allahumma adhhib 'anhu harraha wa bardaha wa wasabaha' (O Allah, remove from him its heat, its cold and its illness). So he stood up. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sees in himself, his wealth or his brother something that pleases him, let him supplicate for blessing (fal-yubarrik), for the evil eye is real."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (S) and (M) a blank space is left in place of the word "abi".

Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is weak like the previous chain; moreover it is "mursal", since the Companion Abd Allah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) is not mentioned in it.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 24/ (15700) via Waki' bin al-Jarrah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Ahmad's narration there is a "qalb" (inversion) between the names of Amir bin Rabi'ah and Sahl bin Hunayf.
