Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7686

Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Zurarah narrates from his paternal uncle, who said: Sayyiduna As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) was afflicted by an ailment which the people of Madinah call "dhibh" (a severe throat disease). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterised him, but he died. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a bad death for the Jews; they will surely say: '(If he were a true prophet,) why did he not save his companion?' Yet I have no power over anything, neither for him nor for myself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "Sa'd", but according to "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", Ahmad's "al-Ilal" (491) and our edition of "Sunan Ibn Majah" (3492), the correct name is "As'ad".

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is corrupted into "al-rih", whereas in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" and the other sources it is transmitted correctly.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is corrupted and written as "ka-yahud".

Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but there is disagreement about whether the paternal uncle of Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman (Yahya bin As'ad bin Zurarah) was a Companion. However, the previous narration is a shahid (supporting report) for it.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Majah (3492) via Muhammad bin Ja'far and al-Nadr bin Shumayl (separately), from Shu'bah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir contradicted Shu'bah in this and narrated it from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman as "mursal", without mention of Yahya bin As'ad.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 563).
Details of the narration: The marfu' wording in it is: "Have yourself cauterised, for I will not blame myself concerning you."
