Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7685

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sayyiduna As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was suffering from "shawkah" (erysipelas or a throat ailment). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) went in to him, he said: "What a bad death this one will be! The Jews will say: '(If he were a prophet,) why did he not save him?' Yet I have no power over anything, neither for him nor for myself. And let them not blame (me) regarding Abu Umamah." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be cauterised, but he passed away.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), provided that Abu Umamah is regarded by them as a Companion, and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (Z) has "Sa'd", whereas according to manuscripts (S) and (M), "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" and the other source works, the correct name is "As'ad", which is what has been recorded here.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to supporting reports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, except that Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf only saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (ru'yah) and was not a Companion (with hearing), so this narration of his is "mursal". However, it is narrated through other routes which make it authentic, as will become clear in the takhrij below and in the author's next chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 28/ (17238) via Zam'ah bin Salih, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri. See the rest of its takhrij there.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it similarly at 27/ (16618) via Amr bin Shu'ayb, from his father, from one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" for the purpose of corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Note / Clarification: "Al-shawkah" means "al-dhubhah", as in the next hadith. According to "al-Qamus al-Muhit", al-dhubhah is a pain in the throat, or blood that chokes and kills.
