Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "sahih", and its chain is "hasan" on account of Amr bin Asim (bin Ubayd Allah bin al-Wazi').
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 33/ (19833), Muslim (1226) (167) and Ibn Hibban (3938) via Humayd Ibn Hilal, from Mutarrif bin Abd Allah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) including it in "al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn" is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part (since it is already in Sahih Muslim).
Reference / Source: It was recorded similarly, but without mention of "cauterisation with fire", by Ahmad 33/ (19841) via Sa'id bin Abi Arubah and (19842) via Ma'mar, and by Muslim (1226) (168) via Shu'bah; all three from Qatadah.
Important point: The meaning of the hadith is that Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered from haemorrhoids, and he had himself cauterised (kayy) to treat them, because of which the angels stopped greeting him with salam. When he gave up cauterisation, the angels resumed greeting him.
