It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from the Ansar became severely ill, and cauterisation was prescribed for him. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from them. They came again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away again. Then on the third or fourth time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, then apply heated stones to him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

In Zuhayr's narration it is: "Apply heated stones to him if you wish," and he (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) was as though angry. In Shu'bah's narration in al-Nasa'i it is: "Apply heated stones to him, burn him," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that; while in Ibn Hibban's narration he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and disliked it.

Note / Clarification: This narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (8488) via Isra'il, who narrates it from his grandfather Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "irdifuhu" means: cauterise him with "radf", and radf are stones heated on a fire.
