Grading: Its chain is weak (da'if). Technical note / Defect ('illah): An error (wahm) occurred in this chain, since al-Sarraj said in it "Mis'ar from Muhammad bin Qays", whereas the correct version is what al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi stated, namely that it is "Abu Ma'shar from Muhammad bin Qays". This is how al-Hasan bin Sufyan al-Hafiz narrated it from Uqbah bin Mukram, as al-Bayhaqi mentioned. This "Abu Ma'shar" is actually Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi, who is weak, and Muhammad bin Qays is "al-Madani al-Qass" (the storyteller of Madinah). His narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is 'mursal', although he himself is trustworthy (thiqah) (Abu Dawud, Ya'qub bin Sufyan and Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy), while al-Dhahabi slipped in his book 'al-Talkhis' and declared him weak. Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (1174) and al-Bayhaqi (2/47) narrated it via two routes from Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Sarraj with this same chain.
