Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7668

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Cupping in the very middle of the head is (a means of relief) from insanity, leprosy, drowsiness and toothache." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call it munqidhah (the rescuer).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of the narrator Abu Musa Isa bin Abd Allah appears this way in this narration (with his father's name as Abd Allah), whereas his father's well-known name is Maysarah. Either this narration is someone's error, or there is disagreement about his father's name, especially since this narrator is well known as Isa bin Abi Isa, and this Isa is matruk (abandoned). He is also called al-Khayyat, al-Hannat and al-Khabbat because he practised these three trades.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (4623) via Isma'il bin Abi Uways, from Yazid bin Abd al-Malik al-Nawfali, from Abu Musa al-Hannat, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said that this hadith is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri only with this chain and that Ibn Abi Uways is alone in narrating it, whereas in fact the narrator who is alone in it is Abu Musa al-Hannat.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (13150) and "al-Awsat" (4547), and in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (507).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Abbadi is majhul (unknown), and about his shaykh Muslim (or Maslamah) bin Salim al-Juhani, Abu Dawud said: he is not thiqah. Ibn Abd al-Hadi, in "al-Sarim al-Munki" p. 49, declared this hadith mawdu' (fabricated).
Details of the narration: This narration is reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) through two routes:
Reference / Source: The first route is that of Isma'il bin Shabib (or Shaybah) al-Ta'ifi, who narrates it from Ibn Jurayj, from Ata', from Ibn Abbas. It was recorded by al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" 1/ 489 and 490, al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (101), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (11446), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 6/ 51, and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb" (321) and (506).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narrator Isma'il is munkar al-hadith. According to al-Uqayli, and Ibn Adi said similarly, he narrated from Ibn Jurayj munkar reports that are not preserved through any established route.
Reference / Source: The second route is that of Umar bin Riyah al-Abdi; it was recorded by al-Tabari 1/ 528, Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" 2/ 86, al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (10938), Ibn Adi 5/ 51, and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb" (296).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Umar bin Riyah is matruk (abandoned), and some scholars have accused him (of lying).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) is in al-Tabari 1/ 529 and al-Tabarani (23/ 667) via al-Harith bin Ubayd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Harith bin Ubayd is not a strong narrator, and the mawla of Umm Salamah is unnamed (mubham) and unidentified, so these supporting reports give no strength.
Important point: However, cupping in the middle of the head is authentically established as an act of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the hadith of Abd Allah Ibn Buhaynah (al-Bukhari 1836 and 5698, Muslim 1203) and the hadith of Ibn Abbas (al-Bukhari 5700).
