Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7655

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he visited al-Muqanna' (a man by that name) when he was ill, then said: I will not leave here until he has cupping done, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, there is healing in it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14598), al-Bukhari (5697), Muslim (2205), al-Nasa'i (7549) and Ibn Hibban (6076) recorded it through various routes from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same chain.
Important point: Al-Hakim's mentioning it (in the Mustadrak) is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part, since it is already in the Sahihayn.
Details of the narration: This narration will come again by way of Ibn Wahb at number (8457).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14701), al-Bukhari (5683, 5702, 5704) and Muslim (2205/71) recorded it by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Sulayman, from Asim bin Umar.
Details of the narration: Asim says that Jabir bin Abd Allah came to us among our family, and a man was complaining of a boil or wound. Jabir asked: What is troubling you? He said: A boil that is very painful. Jabir said: Boy! Bring me a cupper (hajjam). He said: O Abu Abd Allah, what will you do with a cupper? He said: I want to apply a cupping glass to it. He said (fearfully): By Allah, even a fly settling on me or a garment touching me causes me severe pain. When Jabir saw his distress, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If there is good in any of your remedies, it is in the incision of the cupper, a drink of honey, or a sting of fire," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "I do not like to be cauterised." So the cupper came, made the incision, and his pain went away. This wording is Muslim's, while Ahmad and al-Bukhari confined themselves in their narrations to the marfu' part.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding the narrator "al-Muqanna'", al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" 17/ 453 that he is Ibn Sinan, a Successor (tabi'i), and "I know him only through this one hadith."
