Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7643

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to the disliked yet beneficial thing, that is, 'talbinah' (a broth). By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), it washes your stomach just as water washes dirt from the face." And when anyone of the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, the cooking pot would remain on the fire until the matter was decided: either he (the sick person) died or he recovered.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), for Muslim used Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib as evidence and Bukhari used Ayman bin Nabil al-Makki as evidence; nevertheless, the two of them did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: This part has dropped out of the handwritten manuscripts, while the author (al-Hakim) has narrated more than ten hadiths in this book through this chain (series).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Muhammad (al-Dhuhli) did not live early enough to meet Mu'tamir bin Sulayman (i.e. a meeting is not established).

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in it over the narrator Ayman bin Nabil: one group narrated it through "Fatimah from Umm Kulthum", while another group dropped Fatimah. There is also disagreement over Fatimah's lineage: some said "bint Abi Layth" and some "bint Abi Aqrab", and she is "majhul" (unknown). What occurs with the author here and at number (8449), calling her "bint al-Mundhir al-Zubayriyyah", is an error. Umm Kulthum (bint Amr al-Qurashiyyah) is also an unknown narrator.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i recorded it (7531) by way of Muhammad bin Abd al-A'la, from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, from Ayman bin Nabil, with this same chain. Also Ahmad 43 / (26050) recorded it from Rawh bin Ubadah, and al-Nasa'i (7532) by way of Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tara'ifi, both from Ayman bin Nabil.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (41/ 25066) and Ibn Majah (3446) recorded it by way of Waki'; Ahmad also, 41/ (24500) and 42 / (25192), from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri; and al-Nasa'i (7530) by way of Isa bin Yunus.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of these three from Ayman bin Nabil there is no mention of "Fatimah"; rather it is directly "from Umm Kulthum, from A'ishah".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded (5690) by way of Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from A'ishah, as "mawquf", that she used to order "talbinah" and would say: "It is disliked but beneficial."
Note / Clarification: "Talbinah" is a thin broth or porridge made from flour and the like, and sometimes honey is also added to it.
