Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7606

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked ten things: yellow colour (that is, the perfume khaluq); changing (the colour of) grey hair; letting the waist-wrapper trail; wearing a gold ring; tying amulets; reciting incantations (ruqyah) other than with the Mu'awwidhat (the Qur'anic surahs of refuge); throwing dice (ka'b); displaying adornment in an improper place (showing adornment before non-mahram men); practising withdrawal ('azl) in an unlawful manner; and harming a child (through pregnancy during the nursing period), though without declaring it forbidden.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (3) Manuscripts (S) and (M) have the word "bil-'udhat".

Grading: (4) Its chain is da'if (weak). Al-Qasim bin Hassan is alone in narrating from Abd al-Rahman bin Harmalah (who is al-Kufi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ali bin al-Madini said in "al-Ilal" (169): "I do not know anyone who narrated anything from this Abd al-Rahman bin Harmalah except by this route, and we do not know him among the students of Abd Allah (bin Mas'ud)." Imam al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/ 270): "His hadith is not sound." And Imam al-Dhahabi, after citing this hadith in "Mizan al-I'tidal" (2/ 556), declared it "munkar".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4222) recorded it from Musaddad bin Musarhad, with this chain, and said: "The people of Basrah are alone in the chain of this hadith."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (9310) and Ibn Hibban (5682, 5683) through various routes from Mu'tamir bin Sulayman; and by Imam Ahmad (6/ 3605, 3774 and 7/ 4179) through various routes from al-Rukayn bin al-Rabi', with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (6/ 3582) recorded through the route of Abu al-Kanud: "One day I found a ring, and Ibn Mas'ud saw it on my hand and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the gold ring." See the rest of its takhrij and supporting reports there.
Note / Clarification: "Al-ki'ab" means the pieces (dice) of nard (backgammon).
Note / Clarification: And his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "withdrawing the water (semen) from other than its proper place" refers to coitus interruptus ('azl) with a woman.
Note / Clarification: And "fasad al-sabi" (harming the child) refers to what was widely believed among them, that intercourse with a nursing woman spoils her milk. But the sahih hadith in Muslim (1442) refutes this idea: "I intended to forbid ghilah (intercourse during the nursing period) until I remembered that the Romans and Persians do that and it does not harm their children."
