Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 76

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the day Allah Almighty spoke to Musa (peace be upon him), he was wearing a woollen cloak, woollen trousers, a woollen cap and a woollen wrap, and his sandals were of the hide of a donkey that had not been ritually slaughtered."
Imam Bukhari and Muslim both agreed on using the hadith of Sa'id bin Mansur as evidence. The narrator named Humayd here is not Humayd bin Qays al-A'raj; rather, Imam Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh" that Humayd bin Ali al-A'raj al-Kufi is munkar al-hadith (a narrator of denounced hadith), while Abdullah bin al-Harith al-Najrani is used as evidence, and Imam Muslim alone used Khalaf bin Khalifah as evidence. This is an important hadith on the subject of tasawwuf and of Allah speaking, but the two of them did not record it. It also has a supporting narration (shahid) from the hadith of Isma'il bin Ayyash.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Humayd al-A'raj is a "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned) narrator. It is surprising how Imam al-Hakim recorded it, when he himself later quotes Imam al-Bukhari as saying that he is "munkar al-hadith". This same narration will come with al-Hakim at number (3472) by way of Umar bin Hafs, where Humayd is mistakenly named "Humayd bin Qays", and there Imam al-Hakim, through an oversight (dhuhul), called it sahih according to al-Bukhari's criteria, although here he himself stated that he is not Ibn Qays (and this is correct). Where "Ibn Qays" is written there, it is a mistake by one of the narrators.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin al-Harith did not hear from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), as stated explicitly by Imam Ali bin al-Madini, Yahya bin Ma'in and others.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it at (1734) by way of Ali bin Hujr, from Khalaf bin Khalifah, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: According to Imam al-Tirmidhi, "kummah" means a small cap (qalansuwah).

Reference / Source: This narration is found with Imam Muslim only.

Note / Clarification: The printed edition has the words "wa al-takallum" here.
