Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7599

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wear turbans; (by this) your forbearance (hilm) will increase."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts it is written "Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Abd Allah al-Muzani", which is a mistake. We have written it in its correct form, because this name occurs frequently in "al-Mustadrak", including more than ten hadiths which he narrated from Abu Khalifah, and Abu Khalifah is al-Fadl bin al-Hubab.

Note / Clarification: (3) Manuscript (S) has "from Usamah" and manuscript (M) has "from Abu Salamah", and both are distortions.

Grading: (4) Its chain is very weak and munkar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Ubayd Allah bin Abi Humayd is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith) (and it is for this reason that al-Dhahabi criticised it in "al-Talkhis"). He has strange reports from Abu al-Malih. The author (al-Hakim) himself also graded him weak in his book "al-Madkhal ila al-Sahih" (101), saying: "He narrated munkar hadiths from Ata' and Abu al-Malih." Despite that, here he declared its chain sahih! (Abu al-Walid is Hisham bin Abd al-Malik al-Tayalisi.)
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bazzar (2945 - Kashf al-Astar), Abu Ya'la in "al-Mu'jam" (165), Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" (2/ 66) in the biography of Ubayd Allah, and Abu al-Shaykh in "Amthal al-Hadith" (248) through the route of Attab bin Harb; and by al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (13/ 332) through the route of Sa'id bin Sallam.
Grading: Both of them (Attab and Sa'id) narrate it from Ubayd Allah bin Abi Humayd with this chain, and Attab and Sa'id are both weak. Al-Bazzar said: "We do not know any other route for it from Ibn Abbas except this one."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (12946) through the route of Imran bin Tammam, from Abu Jamrah, from Ibn Abbas (Imran is weak and munkar al-hadith, as stated in "Lisan al-Mizan"). It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhi in "al-Ilal al-Kabir" (549), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (517) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5894) through the route of Isa bin Yunus al-Sabi'i; and by Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1/ 12) through the route of al-Khalil bin Musa. Both of them narrate it from Ubayd Allah bin Abi Humayd, from Abu al-Malih, from his father Usamah bin Umayr (thus making it part of the Musnad of Usamah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tirmidhi said: I asked Muhammad (al-Bukhari) about this hadith, and he said: "Ubayd Allah bin Abi Humayd is weak and dhahib al-hadith (his hadith is lost); I do not narrate anything from him."
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi (3/ 324) recorded it through the route of Abu Bakr al-Hudhali, from Abu al-Malih, from his father Usamah.
Grading: And Abu Bakr al-Hudhali is matruk al-hadith (abandoned).
