Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7598

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) called for a new shirt of his and put it on. I do not think it had reached his collarbones before he recited: 'Al-hamdu lillahi alladhi kasani ma uwari bihi awrati, wa atajammalu bihi fi hayati' (All praise is for Allah, who clothed me with that by which I cover my private parts and adorn myself in my life). Then he asked: Do you know why I said this? I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) call for new clothes and put them on; I think they had reached his (peace and blessings be upon him) collarbones when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same as I have said. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! There is no Muslim servant who puts on a new garment, then says what I have said, then turns to one of his worn-out old garments (samal) which he has set aside and clothes with it a poor, needy Muslim, clothing him for none but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, except that he will remain in the protection of Allah and the guarantee of Allah, in life and in death, as long as a single thread of it remains on him (the poor man)."
This is a hadith whose chain the two Shaykhs did not use as evidence, and I have not mentioned anything like it in this book either, except that this hadith was narrated uniquely by the Imam of the people of Khurasan, Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, from all the Imams of the people of Sham. So I preferred to record it so that the Muslims would be encouraged to act upon it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name is distorted into "Hakim".

Grading: (3) Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan) because of Ubayd Allah bin Zahr and Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani. Imam al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (2697): "Its chain is not established."
Identification of the narrator: Yahya bin Ayyub is "al-Ghafiqi al-Misri".
Reference / Source: This narration is in "al-Zuhd" of Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak (749), and from him Hannad narrated it in his "al-Zuhd" (656).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Mutarrih bin Yazid, who is weak, narrated it from Ubayd Allah bin Zahr, from al-Qasim, in similar form, as found in Hannad (657), but he dropped Ali al-Alhani from the chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad (1/ 305), Ibn Majah (3557) and al-Tirmidhi (3560) through the route of Abu al-Ala' al-Shami, who said: "Abu Umamah put on a new garment", and then mentioned it in similar form.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "It is gharib." We (the editors) say: Abu al-Ala' is majhul (unknown).
Reference / Source: See the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in "Musnad Ahmad" (1353).
Note / Clarification: "Al-samal" means old, worn-out clothes.
Note / Clarification: "Thawb akhlaq" is said (of a single garment) when it is worn out throughout. See "Lisan al-Arab", root (kh-l-q).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) This is what the author said (that a certain narrator is alone in narrating it), but it is not so, for Sa'id bin Abi Maryam also narrated it from Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi, as found in al-Tabarani's "al-Du'a'" (393) and "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (191).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated from Ubayd Allah bin Zahr by Mutarrih bin Yazid in Hannad's "al-Zuhd" (657), and by Yasin al-Zayyat in Ibn Abi al-Dunya's "al-Shukr" (75) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5874).
