Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7574

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophets (peace be upon them) liked to wear wool, to milk goats, and to ride donkeys.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) This is how it is in the manuscripts, while in Waki''s narration from Isra'il the wording is "la yastahun", and perhaps that is more correct.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Its narrators are trustworthy, but Isra'il (Ibn Yunus al-Sabi'i) is alone in mentioning "Abu al-Ahwas" (Awf bin Malik bin Nadlah) alongside Abu Ubaydah (Ibn Abd Allah bin Mas'ud), whereas neither Sufyan al-Thawri nor anyone else mentioned Abu al-Ahwas. When there is disagreement, Sufyan is given precedence in narrating from Abu Ishaq (Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i), as some scholars have explicitly stated, especially since Sufyan heard from him early, whereas Isra'il heard from his grandfather Abu Ishaq late, when his memory had deteriorated, as Ahmad and Ibn Ma'in said. Therefore there is some unease about his (Abu al-Ahwas's) being mentioned alongside Abu Ubaydah; had it been correct, Sufyan and those with him would not have left it out, because the narration of Abu Ubaydah bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud from his father is munqati' (disconnected).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Waki' in "al-Zuhd" (129) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5746) through the route of Isra'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (337) through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri; and by al-Tayalisi (328), Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (1/ 42), al-Tahawi in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (1532) and al-Bayhaqi (5747) through the route of Yazid bin Ata'; both of them (Sufyan and Yazid) from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Ubaydah alone, with this chain.
