It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that we went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his military expeditions. A man came out in two worn-out, torn garments, intending to drive the camels. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about him: "Does he not have two (garments) other than these?" It was said: "There are two new garments in his bag." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring his bag to me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) opened it, and there were two garments in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man: "Take these two and put them on, and throw away these torn ones." He did so and began driving the camels. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept looking after him as though amazed at his stinginess toward himself, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah strike your neck!" The man turned to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "(O Messenger of Allah, is it) in the path of Allah?" And he was martyred on the day of (the Battle of) al-Yamamah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, since he used Hisham bin Sa'd as evidence in several places, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. However, with Imam Malik this hadith is narrated via Zayd bin Aslam from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The takhrij sources have "هذين" (these two), and that is better.
Grading: (2) This hadith is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The hadith of Hisham bin Sa'd is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports, especially when he narrates from Zayd bin Aslam, for he is the most reliable of people (awthaq al-nas) in narrating from him, as Abu Dawud said; and he has also been corroborated. Details of the narration: Imam Malik narrated it without mentioning the intermediary between Zayd bin Aslam and Jabir, as will come in the next hadith. Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2962 - Kashf al-Astar) recorded it from Abd Allah bin Abi Thumamah al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin Sulayman, with this chain. Reference / Source: And al-Bazzar also narrated it (2964 - Kashf al-Astar) via Abd al-A'la bin Abd al-A'la al-Sami, from Ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi, from 'Ata' bin Yasar. Note / Clarification: He did not quote its wording but said: "Similar to it."
