Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 755

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you performs ablution (wudu) in his house and then comes to the mosque, he remains in a state of prayer until he returns, so let him not do like this (with his fingers)"; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers to show them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (439, 447) recorded it through Imran bin Musa al-Qazzaz, from Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Darimi (1446) and Ibn Khuzaymah (446) recorded it by way of Muhammad bin Muslim al-Ta'ifi, from Isma'il bin Umayyah. See also the following discussion.
Important point: This hadith of prohibition applies to the case where a person is going to the mosque intending to pray, or is sitting in the mosque waiting for the prayer.
Note / Clarification: Apart from this, there are hadiths indicating the permissibility of interlacing the fingers (tashbik) in the mosque, as in the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (482) (the account of Dhu al-Yadayn). For further detail, see "Fath al-Bari" 2/412-414, edited by us.
