Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is severely weak; its narrator Muhammad bin Salim (Abu Sahl al-Kufi) is weak by agreement, and al-Dhahabi declared him "wahin" (very weak) in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Ata'" in the chain refers to Ata' bin Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Al-Harith bin Abi Usamah recorded it (as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (136)), as did al-Daraqutni (1064) and al-Bayhaqi in 2/10, by way of Dawud bin Amr with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi graded it weak because of Muhammad bin Salim.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Musa bin Marwan al-Raqqi differed, with al-Bayhaqi 2/10, and narrated it with the chain Muhammad bin Yazid al-Wasiti from Muhammad bin Ubayd Allah al-Arzami from Ata'.
Grading: This narrator, namely al-Arzami, is "matruk al-hadith" (one whose narrations are abandoned).
Reference / Source: Likewise, al-Bayhaqi recorded it in 2/11 by way of al-Harith bin Nabhan, from Muhammad bin Ubayd Allah al-Arzami.
Grading: The narrator al-Harith is also "matruk".
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (1062) and al-Bayhaqi 2/11 recorded it by way of Ahmad bin Ubayd Allah bin al-Hasan al-Anbari, who said: "I found in my father's book: Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman al-Arzami narrated to us, from Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Jabir…"
Grading: This chain is weak because Ahmad bin Ubayd Allah al-Anbari is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown status), as Ibn al-Qattan al-Fasi mentioned in his book "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" 3/359, where he also raised other technical objections against it. Al-Bayhaqi said: "We do not know of a sound, strong chain for this hadith."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also the hadith of Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated similarly with Ibn Majah (1020) and al-Tirmidhi (345, 2957), but its chain is severely weak.
General principle: Al-Tirmidhi said that most of the people of knowledge hold this view: if, because of clouds, the direction of the qiblah is not known and one (after making an effort) prays facing the wrong direction, and it becomes clear afterwards that the direction was wrong, the prayer is valid (it need not be repeated). This is also the view of Sufyan al-Thawri, Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, Ahmad and Ishaq bin Rahawayh.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Several hadith scholars graded this narrator weak, as mentioned in his biography in "Tahdhib al-Kamal", and al-Daraqutni and others called him "matruk".
