Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7506

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah has some servants who are neither Prophets nor martyrs, yet on the Day of Resurrection the Prophets and martyrs will envy them because of their nearness to Allah Almighty and their rank with Him." At this, a Bedouin knelt on his knees and said: "O Messenger of Allah! People who are neither Prophets nor martyrs, yet the Prophets and martyrs will envy them because of their nearness to Allah Almighty and their rank with Him! Describe them to us and make their reality clear to us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will be people from various families and scattered tribes who, solely for the pleasure of Allah, became friends with one another and loved one another for His sake. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will set up pulpits of light for them. When other people are afraid, they will have no fear. These are the friends of Allah upon whom there will be no fear, nor will they grieve."
Imam al-Hakim said that the chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim did not record it.

Note / Clarification: (1) The wording between the brackets we have established (inserted) from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): the narrators of this chain are thiqat (trustworthy) except Shuja' bin al-Walid, who is saduq (truthful) and there is no harm in him; however, we do not know of any hearing or narration by Ziyad bin Khaythamah (who is al-Ju'fi) from his father other than in this narration, and Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Nasa'i (11172) and Ibn Hibban (573); the wording in Ibn Hibban is: "Among the servants of Allah there are servants who are not prophets, yet the prophets and the martyrs will envy them. It was said: Who are they, so that we may love them? He said: They are people who loved one another by the light of Allah, without ties of kinship or lineage; their faces will be light, and they will be on pulpits of light; they will not fear when people fear, and they will not grieve when people grieve." Then he recited the verse: ﴿أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ﴾ (Unquestionably, the allies of Allah - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve).
