Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7483

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Ka'bi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his guest. His (special) hospitality is a day and a night, and hospitality is three days; whatever is beyond that is charity. And it is not lawful for him (the guest) to stay (with the host for so long) that he puts him in difficulty." In the narration of Ibn Wahb there is this addition: "And his special hospitality is that he honours him on the first day with the best of what he can find." And he said: "Yathwi" means to stay.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Yet its narration from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is also authentic, and I think that they recorded it; but in my view the two Shaykhs left out the hadith of Abu Shurayh because of the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah.

Reference / Source: Only the portion "fal-yukrim dayfahu" (let him honour his guest), without the rest of the hadith, was narrated by Imam Ahmad (26/ 16370, 27159) and Muslim (48/ 77) via the route of Nafi' bin Jubayr, from Abu Shurayh, with this same chain.

Important point: You have already learned that the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated the hadith of Abu Shurayh, and they also narrated the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, as will follow.
