It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Banu Ubayd! Who is your chief?" They said: "Al-Jadd bin Qays, although there is some stinginess (miserliness) in him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And what disease is more grievous than stinginess? Rather, your chief and the son of your chief is Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and Sa'id bin Muhammad al-Warraq is a trustworthy (thiqah) and reliable (ma'mun) narrator.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan", in sha' Allah, but this chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of Sa'id bin Muhammad - who is al-Warraq; however, he has been corroborated. (5031). Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (8008), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Umar, page 101), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1203) and Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/ 403) via the route of Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jawhari, with this same chain. Details of the narration: In al-Bazzar's narration alone the words "O Banu Salimah" appear in place of "Banu 'Ubayd". Banu 'Ubayd is in fact a branch of Banu Salimah, and Bishr bin al-Bara' was one of them. Important point: See the earlier narration number (5031).
Reference / Source: The route of 'Amr bin Dinar from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah: it was narrated by al-Isma'ili in his "Mu'jam" (278), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (3650), Abu al-Shaykh in "al-Amthal" (90) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10358) via the route of Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, from 'Amr bin Dinar, with this same chain. Details of the narration: It contains the words "O Banu Salimah", and it also states that he made "'Amr bin al-Jamuh" their chief. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim al-Khuzi (who is in the chain) is "matruk" (abandoned), so his corroboration is of no worth (i.e. this corroboration is not reliable). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni, after mentioning this route of al-Khuzi in "al-'Ilal" (1399), said: And Qabisah bin 'Uqbah narrated it from Ibn 'Uyaynah, from 'Amr bin Dinar, from Jabir, and Abu al-Rabi' al-Samman corroborated him in narrating it from 'Amr. Others besides them narrate it from 'Amr bin Dinar as "mursal", and the mursal version is more likely (to be correct).
