It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to him and invoked a distant tie of kinship with him, so he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Know your lineages (ancestry) so that you may join your ties of kinship, for a tie of kinship has no closeness when it is severed, however close it may be (in lineage), and it is not distant when it is joined, however distant it may be."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
