It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in a red leather tent with about forty men. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(The doors of conquest) will be opened for you; you will be helped and you will gain spoils. So whoever of you reaches that time, let him fear Allah, enjoin what is good, forbid what is evil, and maintain ties of kinship. And the example of one who helps his people in a wrongful matter is like a camel that is falling (into a well) and he is pulling it by its tail (meaning that he cannot save it from destruction)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy, but there is disagreement over whether 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud heard from his father. Whoever affirms his hearing grades the chain hasan; otherwise it is weak because of the break (inqita'). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (6/ 3801), Abu Dawud (5118), al-Nasa'i (9742) and Ibn Hibban (4804) recorded it both at length and in abridged form, through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (6/ 3694, 3726 and 7/ 4156, 4292), Abu Dawud (5117) and al-Tirmidhi (2257) recorded it in abridged form through various routes from Simak bin Harb, in the same way; and the narration of Abu Dawud is "mawquf". Details of the narration: Some narrators added to it: "And whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire." Note / Clarification: The phrase "yumaddu bi-dhanabihi": it came like this in this narration, while in some narrations the words are "yunza'u bi-dhanabihi" (he will be pulled out by his tail), and it is on this that Mulla 'Ali al-Qari commented in "Sharh al-Mishkat", saying: It is in the passive form, i.e. he will be dragged and pulled out of it; "bi-dhanabihi" means he will be dragged from behind. It has been said that the meaning is that this man threw himself into destruction through that false support (partisanship), since he sought elevation by (wrongly) supporting his people, so he fell into the depths of the well of sin and perished like the camel; nothing will benefit him, just as pulling a camel out of a well by its tail does not benefit it.
