It is narrated from Thabit bin Yazid al-Khawlani that he had an uncle who used to sell wine and give its price in charity. I forbade him from this, but he did not desist. Then I came to Madinah and met Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). I asked him about wine and its price, and he said: "It is forbidden, and its price is also forbidden." Then he said: "O community of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If there were to be another Book after your Book, or another Prophet after your Prophet, rulings would have been revealed concerning you just as they were revealed for those before you; but this matter of yours has been deferred until the Day of Resurrection, and by my life, that is more severe for you." The narrator says: I refused (to accept my uncle's position). Then I met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him about the price of wine. He said: "I will tell you about wine. I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the particular posture with his knees drawn up to his stomach and a cloth wrapped around them (muhtabi), when he (peace and blessings be upon him) undid that wrap (hubwah) and said: 'Whoever has any of this wine, let him inform me of it.' So the people began coming to him (peace and blessings be upon him). One would say: 'I have a large container (rawiyah) of wine'; another would say: 'I have a jar'; and another would say: 'I have a large leather waterskin (ziqq)', or whatever they had. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Gather it at such-and-such a place in al-Baqi', then inform me.' They did so and then told him (peace and blessings be upon him). (Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:) I got up and he (peace and blessings be upon him) walked leaning on me. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met us, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and moved me to his left, and put Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in my place (on the right). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met us, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and moved me to his left, and walked between the two of them, until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the stock of wine, he asked the people: 'Do you recognise this?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah! This is wine.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then he said: 'Indeed, Allah Almighty has cursed wine, the one who presses it ('asiruha), the one for whom it is pressed (mu'tasiruha), the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who carries it and the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who buys it and the one who consumes its price.' Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a knife and said: 'Sharpen it.' They did so, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and began to slit the waterskins. The people said: 'There is benefit in these waterskins (that is, the empty skins could be of use).' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Yes! But I am doing all this out of anger for the sake of Allah, because in it (the wine) is Allah's displeasure.' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I will do this for you.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'No.'" (The narrator says:) Some narrators have added some words over others in this hadith.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The text between the brackets was missing from our manuscripts, and we completed it from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" and "Shu'ab al-Iman". Al-Bayhaqi narrated it via two of his shaykhs with the chain of Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub. Reference / Source: Ibn Hajar indicated in "Ithaf al-Maharah" 8/ 281 that it is likewise in the Book of Drinks (Kitab al-Ashribah) of Ibn Wahb's "Muwatta'".
Grading: In the light of corroborations and supporting reports, this chain could possibly be graded "hasan", because in it is Thabit bin Yazid al-Khawlani, from whom two narrators narrated and whom Ibn Hibban mentioned in "al-Thiqat"; he is also corroborated on some parts. Important point: As for the story of the curse upon wine, the one who presses it and so on, it is "sahih", according to the details that follow. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 8/ 287 and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5195) through the route of Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this same chain; however, the narration in "Shu'ab al-Iman" is abridged. Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (3342) through the route of Yunus bin 'Abd al-A'la, from Ibn Wahb. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it the word "al-Baqi'" has been miswritten (tashif) as "al-Naqi'". Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in (3343 m) through the route of Talq bin al-Samh al-Lakhmi, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shurayh, from Khalid bin Yazid, from Sharahil bin Bukayl, from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although a group narrated from Talq bin al-Samh, no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone, and he also contradicted others in its chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in 9/ (5390) from Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, while al-Tahawi in (3343) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (8/ 287) narrated it through the route of 'Abd Allah bin Wahb. Both of them (Hasan al-Ashyab and Ibn Wahb) narrate it from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Abu Tu'mah, from Ibn 'Umar, in a similar way. Grading: Its chain is "hasan", because the narration of Ibn Wahb from Ibn Lahi'ah is acceptable (salih), and a group also narrated from Abu Tu'mah, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Reference / Source: The story of the curse upon wine has passed earlier with the author at no. (2266) in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Important point: This story will also come in the next hadith from the narration of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
