It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: When the prohibition of wine was revealed, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to one another and said: "Wine has been made forbidden, and it has been made equal to shirk (associating partners with Allah)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "Ibn".

Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Note / Clarification: Abu Shihab al-Hannat is 'Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Kinani.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (12399), and through his route al-Diya' al-Maqdisi recorded it in "al-Mukhtarah" 10/ (192) via Ahmad bin Yunus, from Abu Shihab al-Hannat, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: The word "'idlan" (with a kasrah on the 'ayn) means "like" or "equal". It is an allusion to the noble verse in which wine, gambling, stone altars and divining arrows are declared the work of Satan; thus it (drinking wine) was made equal to idol worship.
