It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the command prohibiting wine was revealed, the Jews said: "Did your brothers who died not drink it?!" So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they ate (before the command came)." [Surah al-Ma'idah: 93]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was said to me: 'You are among them.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it (with these words); they only agreed, through the narration of Shu'bah, on a brief hadith of Sayyiduna al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) with this meaning.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Without the mention of the Jews, this is a "sahih hadith". Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is weak on account of Sa'd (the father of Muhammad) and Sulayman bin Qarm, though both are corroborated on the core of the hadith. Sa'd bin al-Hasan (the father of Muhammad) in the chain has been attributed to his grandfather, while his father's actual name is Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-'Awfi. Note / Clarification: Ibrahim is Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i. Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar narrated it in the "Musnad" (1513) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (10011) through the route of Sadaqah bin Sabiq, from Sulayman bin Qarm, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Muslim narrated it in (2459), al-Tirmidhi in (3053) and al-Nasa'i in (11088) through the route of 'Ali bin Mushir, from al-A'mash, but without mention of what the Jews said. Note / Clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) words "It was said to me: you are among them" mean that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is among those who believed and did righteous deeds, who are mentioned in the verse.
(3051). Important point: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) made an oversight in attributing this route to the "Sahihayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim), whereas through this route the narration is in al-Tirmidhi at no. (3051).
