It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muslim bin Yasar al-Juhani that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about this verse: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants" [Surah al-A'raf: 172]. Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was asked about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah created Adam, then wiped his back with His right hand and brought forth from it his offspring, and said: 'I have created these for Paradise, and they will do the deeds of the people of Paradise.' Then He wiped his back and brought forth from it (the rest of his) offspring, and said: 'I have created these for the Fire, and they will do the deeds of the people of Hell.'"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two of them, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts and the printed edition this name is written "al-Darabardi" (with the ra' before the alif), but with al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi this nisbah occurs repeatedly as "al-Darbardi" (with the alif before the ra'), as we have recorded it. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also quoted it this way in "Ithaf al-Maharah", although this nisbah was not found in any of the books of genealogy (ansab). Note / Clarification: Abu Bakr bin Abi Nasr is "Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hatim", from whom the author narrated in other places by his actual name.
Grading: This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting reports), but this chain is "da'if" because of a break (inqita'). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muslim bin Yasar al-Juhani did not hear from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Moreover, no one except Abd al-Hamid bin Abd al-Rahman narrated from him, and no one other than Ibn Hibban and al-Ijli is reported to have declared him trustworthy, so he is barely known. Imam al-Hakim made an oversight (dhuhul) here in grading it "sahih" according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs despite the break. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 1/(311), Abu Dawud (4703), al-Tirmidhi (3075), al-Nasa'i (11126) and Ibn Hibban (6166) narrated it through various routes from Imam Malik with this chain. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan". Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it at (4704) by way of Umar bin Ju'thum, from Zayd bin Abi Unaysah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain "Nu'aym bin Rabi'ah" is mentioned as an intermediary between Muslim bin Yasar and Umar, and this Nu'aym is "majhul" (unknown); his identity is not established. Reference / Source: For the full details of this discussion, its sources and supporting reports, see "Musnad Ahmad" and "Sunan Abi Dawud". (4045). Important point: This hadith will come again later at numbers (3295) and (4045).
