Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7393

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of you drinks, let him drink it in a single breath."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been changed (corrupted) into "al-Qattan".

Grading: This narration is "shadh" in both its chain and its text.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), Aban bin Yazid al-'Attar contradicted the majority of those who narrate from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, as will be detailed below.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud narrated it in (31) from Muslim bin Ibrahim and Musa bin Isma'il, from Aban al-'Attar, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah, with this chain, but "Ishaq bin 'Abd Allah" is not mentioned in it.
Details of the narration: The wording there is: "And when he drinks, let him not drink in a single breath." This wording goes against the narration of al-Hakim and also against the majority of narrators from Yahya bin Abi Kathir.
Important point: This hadith is narrated through many routes and is "mahfuz" (preserved) through the route of Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah, from his father, as marfu', with the wording "prohibiting breathing into the vessel". See: al-Bukhari (153) and Muslim (267). For the complete takhrij see "Musnad Ahmad" 32/ (19419).
