It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats, then whatever (particle) he moves about with his tongue (that is, what remains inside the mouth), let him swallow it, and whatever he removes with a toothpick, let him spit it out. Whoever does so has done well, and whoever does not, there is no harm on him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because Husayn al-Himyari and his shaykh Abu Sa'd al-Khayr are majhul (unknown). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators gave the shaykh's name as "Abu Sa'd al-Khayr", which is an error; as Ibn Hajar made clear in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib" in the biography of Abu Sa'id al-Hubrani, the correct name is "Abu Sa'id al-Hubrani", whereas "Abu Sa'd (or Sa'id) al-Khayr" is a Companion of the Messenger. Note / Clarification: The details of the other narrators in the chain are: Abu Qilabah is 'Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi, Abu 'Asim is al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil, and Thawr bin Yazid is the Syrian narrator of Hims. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in the "Musnad" 14/ (8838), Abu Dawud in the "Sunan" (35) and Ibn Majah in (337) and (338) at length, through two routes from Thawr bin Yazid, with this same chain.
