It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am in a state of severe hunger and hardship. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to his wives, but nothing was found with them. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there anyone who will host this man tonight? May Allah have mercy on him." A man from the Ansar stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am here. He took him to his home and said to his wife: Honour the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and do not hold anything back. His wife said: By Allah! I have nothing except the children's food. He said: When the children ask for supper, put them to sleep, then come and put out the lamp; we will go hungry tonight. So she did so. The next morning the man went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty was greatly pleased (or smiled) at the deed of so-and-so and so-and-so (the two of you, husband and wife)." And Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, revealed this verse: "And they give others preference over themselves, even though they themselves are in poverty" [Surah al-Hashr: 9].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its chain is "jayyid" (good) because of Fudayl bin Marzuq, and there is also corroboration (mutaba'ah) for him. Reference / Source: It was recorded in full and in abridged form by Imam al-Bukhari (3798) and (4889), Imam Muslim (2054), Imam al-Tirmidhi (3304), Imam al-Nasa'i (11518) and Ibn Hibban (5286) through the route of Fudayl bin Ghazwan from Abu Hazim, with this same chain. Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan sahih". Imam al-Hakim's including this hadith as an addition (istidrak) is the result of an oversight (dhuhul) on his part. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Hibban (7264) through the route of Yazid bin Kaysan from Abu Hazim.
