Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 735

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would be in the mosque and the iqamah for the prayer would be called; if he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that the people were few, he would sit (and wait), then lead the prayer, and if he saw that the congregation was large, he would lead the prayer.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Jurayj explicitly stated that he heard from Musa bin Uqbah, in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 2/20, which removes the concern of tadlis.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (546) recorded it through Abu Asim, who is al-Dahhak bin Makhlad, from Ibn Jurayj, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration it says "Abu Mas'ud al-Zuraqi from Ali", which is an error; the correct version is that it is the narration of "Mas'ud bin al-Hakam al-Zuraqi from Ali", and his kunyah is Abu Harun.
Reference / Source: This narration is with al-Bayhaqi 2/20 from the hadith of Abd al-Majid bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Rawwad, who was among the most knowledgeable of people regarding the hadiths of Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Musa bin Uqbah narrated to me from Nafi' bin Jubayr.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Majid narrated it with al-Bayhaqi as well, and Abu Asim al-Nabil with Abu Dawud (545); both of them from Ibn Jurayj, from Musa bin Uqbah, from Salim Abu al-Nadr.
Details of the narration: Abu Asim mentioned it with wording like that of al-Walid bin Muslim with the author (al-Hakim), whereas the wording of Abd al-Majid's narration is: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) would come out to the mosque after the call, and when he saw that the people in the mosque were few…", and he did not mention the iqamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): By this route the narration is "mursal", because Salim Abu al-Nadr is a Tabi'i.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it appeared in the copies of "al-Mustadrak", and it is a mistake, for this is Mas'ud bin al-Hakam and his kunyah is "Abu Harun"; no one gave his kunyah as "Abu al-Hakam".
