Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7338

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you visit your Muslim brother and he gives you food, then eat and do not ask; and if he gives you a drink, then drink it and do not ask."
This hadith has an authentic corroborating report (shahid) on the condition of Imam Muslim alone.

Note / Clarification: This text had dropped out of the manuscripts; "Bishr bin Musa" here is the transmitter of Imam al-Humaydi ('Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr bin 'Isa al-Asadi).

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but there is disagreement over whether it is "marfu'" or "mawquf".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) mentioned it here as marfu', whereas other narrators narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah as "mawquf".
Important point: Imam al-Daraqutni stated explicitly in "al-'Ilal" (2076) that its being "mawquf" is more correct.
Reference / Source: Both 'Abd al-Razzaq (17023) and Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/290 narrated it as "mawquf" from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, from Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: They also added: "If you have doubts (about a drink), then mix water into it".
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (1724) also narrated it as "mawquf" through the route of Abu Ma'shar Najih bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi, from Sa'id, from his father (Kaysan), from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ma'shar al-Sindi is a "da'if" (weak) narrator.
