أخبرنا أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه ببغداد قال قرئ على عبد الملك بن محمد، وأنا أسمع، حدثنا سهل بن حمَّاد وأبو رَبِيعة قالا: حدثنا حمَّاد بن سَلَمة، عن سعيد الجُرَيري. وحدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصَّغَاني، حدثنا عفَّان، حدثنا حمَّاد بن سلمة، حدثنا سعيد بن إياس الجُرَيري، عن أبي العلاء، عن مُطرِّف بن عبد الله، عن عثمان بن أبي العاص أنه قال: يا رسول الله، اجعَلْني إمامَ قومي، قال: "أنت إمامُهم، واقتَدِ بأضعفِهم، واتَّخِذْ مؤذنًا لا يأخذُ على أذانِه أجرًا" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يخرجاه هكذا، وإنما خرَّج مسلم (1) حديث شُعْبة عن عمرو بن مُرَّة عن سعيد بن المسيّب عن عثمان بن أبي العاص أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "إذا أمَمتَ قومًا .... " الحديث.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, make me the imam of my people." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are their imam; take into account (when leading the prayer) the weakest among them, and appoint a mu'adhdhin who takes no wage for his adhan."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

(3) إسناده صحيح، وسماع حماد بن سلمة من الجريري قبل اختلاطه. أبو العلاء: هو يزيد ¤ ¤ ابن عبد الله بن الشِّخّير أخي مطرِّف.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hammad bin Salamah heard from (Sa'id) al-Jurayri before the latter's ikhtilat (deterioration of memory). "Abu al-Ala'" refers to Yazid bin Abd Allah bin al-Shikhkhir, the brother of Mutarrif.
وأخرجه أحمد (26) (16271)، والنسائي (1648) من طريق عفان بن مسلم بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 26/(16271) and al-Nasa'i (1648) recorded it by way of Affan bin Muslim with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد (16270) عن عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث، وأبو داود (531) عن موسى بن إسماعيل، كلاهما عن حماد بن سلمة، به.

Details of the narration: The account of following the pace of the weakest (in the prayer, i.e., the imam taking the weakest follower into consideration) was recorded by Ibn Majah (987) with the chain Sa'id bin Abi Hind from Mutarrif.
وأخرج قصة المؤذن ابن ماجه (714)، والترمذي (209) من طريق الحسن البصري، عن عثمان بن أبي العاص.
Details of the narration: The account concerning the mu'adhdhin was recorded by Ibn Majah (714) and al-Tirmidhi (209) with the chain al-Hasan al-Basri from Uthman bin Abi al-As.
