Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7327

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In the Jahiliyyah, before Islam, people used to cut off the humps of camels and cut off the tails of sheep; then they would eat them and melt down their fat for use. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, the people asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about that, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever part is cut off from a living animal is carrion (in its ruling)."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "hasan" by the combination of its routes.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan and said that the people of knowledge act upon it. Imam al-Bukhari called it "mahfuz" (preserved).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over it from Zayd bin Aslam al-'Adawi, as we have explained in "Musnad Ahmad". Although 'Ali bin Ja'far (Ibn Najih al-Sa'di) is weak, there is corroboration (mutaba'ah) for him.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad 36/(21903), Abu Dawud (2858) and al-Tirmidhi (1480) through the route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Dinar from Zayd bin Aslam, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is some criticism of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah, but in corroborating chains and supporting reports he is of "hasan" standing.
Important point: This same route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Dinar will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (7789).

Note / Clarification: See also the two hadiths after it.
General principle: Lexical explanation: "yajmulun" means "they melt", and "al-wadak" refers to "fat/grease".
