Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7318

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ja'dah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), upon seeing a man with a fat belly, point with his hand towards his belly and say: "If only this (fat or flesh on the belly) were somewhere other than here (that is, spent in toil in the path of Allah), it would have been better for him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word here is written "musghiban", whereas we have written in the text the word found in the margin of Imam al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak"; some of the source works have the words "rajulan saminan" (a fat man). "Al-musmin" (on the pattern of "muhsin") means a person who is very fat.

Grading: There is some weakness (lin) in this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from Abu Isra'il (Shu'ayb al-Jushami) except Imam Shu'bah, and no one other than Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was lenient in declaring it "sahih" in the biography of Ja'dah bin Khalid al-Jushami in "al-Tahdhib"; perhaps this was based on the view that Imam Shu'bah narrates only from trustworthy (thiqah) narrators.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad in "al-Musnad" 25/(15868) and (15869) and 31/(18984) through various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Important point: This narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8088) through the route of Shababah bin Sawwar, from Imam Shu'bah.
